I love my friends. I enjoy their company. I enjoy their insights, but every once in a while I have to step back and wonder if we aren’t falling sheepish, hive mind mentality. My friends came over yesterday. One is a stay at home mother with who works graphic design very rarely. The other just lost her stay at home job organizing projects for a construction company. They’ve both had the luxury of being home with their children a good majority of the time. They talked about the sanctity of motherhood and how mothers are the “guardians of the hearth” thats an old english word for Kitchen, essentially. So, as guardians of the kitchen ( heart of the home) they mentioned how we don’t get respected by society and that the “world” views it as a worthless job and that we should never listen to what the world says about it, because we all know deep down how special it is.
I agreed, being a mother and taking care of the home is a worthwhile endeavor, I would love to quit my job and be with my kids full-time. Its just not in the cards, financially to pull this off. Staying at home is a luxury, that I just can’t afford!
Then I thought… who, really is speaking out against women staying at home and raising their children? Thoughts of radical feminists from the 70s popped into my head. But, the 70′s were a long long time ago. Is that really the prevailing attitude now? The Simpsons and Family guy and multiple other TV shows have pitted butch career women against stay at home moms. You’ll notice however, the stay at home moms almost invariably come out on top.
So I thought I’d take society’s pulse to see where we are at now. Nothing really scientific, just a little googling, here is what I learned.
Searching the term ”stay at home mom”
Okay, lets be more specific.
Searching the term ” stay at home moms lazy”
So far nothing negative, in fact society as a whole seems to be wildly in favor of women staying home and taking care of their children.
searching the term “stay at home mom vs. working mom”
search the term “stay at home mom child development”
The working moms were given more support here because a day care environment has been shown to actually help with communication and reasoning at an early age, but these same experts say that a devoted mother who interacts with their child CAN have the same affect.
Okay so just from my quick perusal of the interwebs, it would appear that stay at home mothers are supported greatly by both society and the behavioral child development experts out there. So don’t feel sorry for yourselves SAHMs the world actually does back you up!
